What does low-level laser mean?
Low-level laser therapy (LLL therapy) is based on the use of a low-energy laser. Unlike laser scalpels, for example, significantly lower powers are applied, as this serves to regulate cells in the body. The metabolism within the cells is stimulated and various biomechanical processes are set in motion. Especially as an accompanying therapy during radiation against cancer, low-level laser therapy relieves pain and irritation of the skin.
Fields of application of the LLL therapy
In radiotherapy, low-level lasers are often used to treat mucositis – an irritation of the mucous membranes caused by radiation. Laser application also treats painful skin irritations and inflammations. Our specialists will inform you on site about further possible applications and individual treatment.
Where can you have low-level laser therapy performed in Munich?
We currently offer low-level laser therapy at our Schwabing location. Our team of specialists creates the treatment plan in coordination with radiation therapy to achieve the best possible results.
What are the effects of LLL therapy?
Low-level laser therapy positively stimulates the body’s own healing processes. The laser influences the cell metabolism. The light of the laser improves the availability of the cell energy substance ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The healing capabilities of the injured cells increase considerably as a result.
In addition, low-level laser therapy promotes the release of pain-inhibiting neurotransmitters, such as serotonin or endorphin. In addition, the treatment has an anti-inflammatory effect. Especially during radiotherapy, inflammatory foci can be reduced more quickly and effectively by means of the laser and the body’s own reactions.
Advantages of the treatment
- Faster regression of edema and swelling
- Significant reduction of (acute) pain
- Shortening of the actual therapy time
- Attenuation of occurring side effects during radiation therapy
- Reduction of the risk of wound infection
- Higher healing speed for irritations and inflammations
- No side effects
- Gentle and very compatible application
Procedure of low level laser therapy
Low-level laser therapy is neither stressful for the body nor dangerous. For each treatment, either smaller areas of the body are lasered selectively over a few minutes or larger areas are lasered using an area laser. In the case of surface irradiation, the application can last between 10 and 20 minutes. To protect against the brightness of the therapy laser, all patients wear protective goggles, which must not be removed for the entire duration of therapy.
For which indications is LLL therapy not used?
In radiotherapy, low-level laser is used for side effect management. Thus, there is more accurate knowledge about the possible applications for radiation patients. The LLL must not be used in the treatment of thyroid gland with known malfunction of the same. During pregnancy, the lower abdomen and lumbar area must not be treated by laser. Reproductive organs (ovaries, testes) are omitted, as are the areas near the eyes.
